Smash Mouth Make Cameo Appearance In 'Rat Race'

SoCal quartet's eponymous third album expected in the fall.

After becoming "all stars" with the release of their most recent album, 1999's Astro Lounge, Smash Mouth are gunning to be movie stars on the basis of their appearance in the upcoming comedy "Rat Race."

The Southern California quartet perform Astro Lounge's hit single "All Star" in the film, according to an Interscope Records spokesperson. Singer Steve Harwell also has a brief speaking role in the flick, which is scheduled for theatrical release in August.

"Rat Race," directed by Jerry Zucker and starring Seth Green, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jon Lovitz and Whoopi Goldberg, concerns a high-stakes gambler who entices participants to race across the country for a $2 million purse.

Meanwhile, Smash Mouth — Harwell, drummer Kevin Coleman, bassist Paul De Lisle and guitarist Greg Camp — continue to work on their eponymous third album, which is expected to surface in the fall, the spokesperson said (see "Smash Mouth Do 'Spooky Thing' With George Clinton").
