Memorial Commemorates Fans Crushed At Pearl Jam Show

Roskilde Festival bans crowd surfing at this year's event featuring Tool, Beck, Neil Young.

The fans who died during Pearl Jam's June 30 show at last year's Roskilde Festival in Denmark (see "Pearl Jam Fans Crushed To Death At Danish Show") have been commemorated with a memorial on the festival grounds, according to festival founder Leif Skov. Nine birch trees have been planted in a circle around a large stone, a simple remembrance of the nine lives lost when fans surged toward the stage on muddy ground.

The festival is also taking preventive measures to help ensure audience safety, including a ban on crowd surfing. The ban will be announced in a safety pamphlet given to each concertgoer, as well as on signs and banners throughout the grounds.

This year's festival runs from June 28 to July 1 and features Tool, Bob Dylan, Beck, Neil Young and PJ Harvey.
