NEW YORK Missy Elliott and Nelly Furtado will get their freak on with Jay Leno next week, in their first, and maybe only, live performance of their "Tomb Raider" soundtrack collaboration.
The duo will perform their revamped version of Elliott's "Get Ur Freak On" on June 14 on "The Tonight Show With Jay Leno," Furtado said. No other joint performances have been scheduled.
Furtado said backstage at New York's Z100 Zootopia 2001 concert on Friday that her collaboration with Elliott came together purely "out of love" between the two artists. Trading verses with Elliott also brought the singer/songwriter back to her hip-hop roots, she said.
"I used to MC when I was 14, so that was awhile back now," Furtado said. "It's kind of funny how I've come full-circle, and here I am [with] one of the best urban acts in the world I'm on her record."
Furtado's enthusiasm for the song bubbled over Friday as she launched into an impromptu rendition of a verse, bouncing to an unheard beat.
Her work on the remix was equally spontaneous, she said, beginning with one verse recorded on her own while Elliott was busy shooting the video for "Lady Marmalade" with Pink, Mya, Lil' Kim and Christina Aguilera.
"I just got there, and I just listened to the track and did my thing, just kind of freestyled, wrote out my rhymes, and I just did it," Furtado said.
When Elliott returned and heard what Furtado had done, Elliott insisted that she record verse after extra verse." That's why I'm all over the track," Furtado said.
The "Tomb Raider" soundtrack, which also features Moby, U2 and Nine Inch Nails (see "U2, Outkast, Nine Inch Nails Do 'Tomb Raider'"), is due in stores Tuesday (June 5).
