Destiny's Child Help Hometown Church With $500K Gift

Money to be used for recreational facility that may be named after band members.

Proving that under that shiny, sweet exterior there's, well, more sweetness, Destiny's Child recently donated $500,000 to a church in their hometown of Houston, Texas.

The ladies of Destiny's Child and their manager, Mathew Knowles (father of group leader Beyoncé Knowles), met with St. John's Methodist Church pastor Rudy Rasmus earlier this week and presented him with the donation privately, according to a spokesperson for the group.

The church, located in downtown Houston, plans to build a recreational facility with the money, and may name the new structure after group members Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland.

"The Knowles family, including Kelly, have always been a wonderful committed part of the St. John's Downtown community," Rasmus said in a statement announcing the charitable act.

The Destiny's Child-funded rec center is expected to open in 10 months.
