Patton Scores With Second Fantomas LP

Work of Rota, Mancini, Morricone and more interpreted on album, due July 24.

Regardless of how many copies the album goes on to sell, it's safe to say Mike Patton has scored with the second LP by Fantômas, The Director's Cut.

For the 16-track LP, scheduled for a July 24 release by Patton's label, Ipecac, the former Faith No More frontman and his bandmates have interpreted selections from the scores for films such as "The Godfather," "Cape Fear" and "Twin Peaks - Fire Walk With Me" — all with the avant-garde weirdness fans have come to expect from Patton, bassist Trevor Dunn (Mr. Bungle), drummer Dave Lombardo (ex-Slayer) and guitarist Buzz Osbourne (Melvins).

For a preview of the album, an MP3 of Fantômas' take on Christopher Komeda's lullabye theme from "Rosemary's Baby" is available for download at

A cover of Irene Cara's "Flashdance ... What a Feeling," from the movie "Flashdance," was originally slated for inclusion and was dropped when the LP became focused on horror and science-fiction soundtracks, according to the band's publicist.

In addition to The Director's Cut, which follows Fantômas' eponymous 1999 debut, the prolific Patton is involved in the third Fantômas album, expected in November; Tomahawk, another all-star endeavor centered on former Jesus Lizard guitarist Duane Denison; Peeping Tom, a relatively accessible undertaking (by Patton's recent standards); and a collaboration with New York turntablists the X-ecutioners, hopeful for 200.
