Former Pavement Guitarist Forms Preston School Of Industry

Scott Kannberg's new trio will release its first album, All This Sounds Gas, this summer.

The post-Pavement landscape does not belong just to former frontman Stephen Malkmus anymore.

Scott Kannberg, the Pavement guitarist once identified on album sleeves as "Spiral Stairs," has a new Bay Area band called the Preston School of Industry. According to a Matador Records spokesperson, All This Sounds Gas, the trio's first album, will likely be released August 28.

Kannberg is joined in PSOI by bassist Jon Erickson (Kinetics, Moore Brothers) and drummer Andrew Borger (Tom Waits, Moore Brothers). The band's moniker comes from a reform school near Oakland, California.

The band has toured with Scottish post-rockers Mogwai and Detroit garage-rock duo the White Stripes. A still-untitled EP (and 10-inch vinyl record) will be released next month on Amazing Grease, Kannberg's label.

The Matador spokesperson reckoned PSOI do not sound as much like Pavement as Malkmus and his band Jicks do, and added that Kannberg's group is influenced by such '80s indie-pop combos as the Go-Betweens, the Chills and Echo & the Bunnymen.

PSOI are planning shows in Chicago and California next month.
