Matthew Sweet, Fountains of Wayne, Jonathan Richman and Yo La Tengo are some of the artists who will pay tribute to the Kinks on This Is Where I Belong: The Songs of Ray Davies and the Kinks, due July 24.
The album, on the Nashville label Praxis Recordings, forgoes the British Invasion band's big hits, such as "You Really Got Me," "A Well Respected Man" and "Lola," to focus on less-familiar numbers, such as "No Return" (sung by Bebel Gilberto), "Starstruck" (Steve Forbert) and "Who'll Be the Next in Line" (Queens of the Stoneage). Richman sings "Stop Your Sobbing," which was a hit for the Pretenders, who don't appear on the disc.
Davies and Blur singer Damon Albarn dueted on the elegiac ballad "Waterloo Sunset," but it hasn't been decided yet whether it will appear on the album. Also, an as-yet-undetermined track from Wilco may be included, according to the album's publicist. Jim Pitt, the music talent booker of Late Night With Conan O'Brien, is the executive producer.
