DJ Pete Tong To Tour North America

English dance music veteran supporting his entry in 'Essential Mix' series, due March 20.

In North America, it's about to all go Pete Tong.

The veteran statesman of English dance music — he's been on the scene there since the early '80s — will begin a DJ tour March 24 at the annual Winter Music Conference, in Miami. From there Tong will conjure his turntable magic in 10 cities over the following two weeks, winding up April 14 at the Los Angeles club Giant.

Tong played eight dates in his first-ever U.S. jaunt in October.

The DJ, who has hosted the immensely popular Friday-night BBC Radio One program "Essential Selection" since 1991, will support his entry in the "Essential Mix" series, which is due March 20. (He will broadcast the show live from Chicago on April 6.) Tong himself launched the series of mix-CDs in the UK in 1997 as an extension of his radio show, and last year he released the first American volume, a double-CD featuring hour-long sets by Fatboy Slim and Paul Oakenfold. Most recently, former Culture Club singer Boy George showcased his DJ skills on an "Essential Mix."

Among the underground tracks Tong helps bubble to the surface on his party-starting "Essential Mix," his first U.S. release, are Future Shock's "Sparc" and Mr. DJ's "Always." Also mixed in are cuts by Pete Heller, a Timo Maas remix and Photek's "Mine to Give."

Tong's music-business career began with an A&R job in 1983 at then-newly founded London Records, where he worked with Bananarama, and in 1988 he created his own label, FFRR (Full Frequency Range Recordings), which flourishes today as a staple of quality dance music. So integral is Tong to the British scene that his name has entered the national rhyming-slang lexicon as a reference to the word "wrong," as in, "It's all gone Pete Tong."

In America later this month, it couldn't be more right.
