Inspired by a parents'-night visit to his 3-year-old daughter's school, Brian Wilson has written a holiday song and posted it on his Web site.
The ex-Beach Boys mastermind recorded the song with his touring band December 9 and posted it Saturday at www.brianwilson.com. "On Christmas Day" is Wilson's first new recording since his 1998 album, Imagination.
The song opens with the same percussive signature as the Beach Boys' "Don't Worry Baby" (RealAudio excerpt) and proceeds into a chord progression and melody that recalls Wilson's '60s output.
"On Christmas Day" is not the first Yuletide song Wilson composed; he wrote and recorded the Beach Boys' "Little Saint Nick" (RealAudio excerpt) in 1964.
The song came to Wilson earlier this month, while he was visiting his daughter Delanie's school, according to Wilson spokesperson Jean Sievers. "He had such a great year," Sievers said. "He was looking forward to Christmas maybe more than he had in the recent past."
Wilson may post other songs on his Web site in the coming year, and he may decide to release "On Christmas Day" commercially next year as well, Sievers said.
Wilson spent a good deal of 2000 touring. During the summer, he performed with an orchestra and his band, performing full-scale versions of songs from the Beach Boys' 1966 chamber-pop opus, Pet Sounds. In the fall, he led his band on a club tour, playing songs from throughout his career.
Also, plans are forming for a March concert, featuring Wilson and multiple artists, at New York's Radio City Music Hall, Sievers said.
