A source close to Weezer confirms that the band has tapped Mikey Welsh to replace original bassist Matt Sharp. Sharp will continue to work with his other band, the Rentals, whose new album is tentatively slated for an August release.
Weezer frontman Rivers Cuomo met Welsh in Boston, Massachusetts while pursuing his degree in creative writing at Harvard. Welsh has worked in the past as a touring musician for Juliana Hatfield.
As we previously reported (see "Weezer Headed To Studio, Meets 'Deedles' On The Way"), Weezer will head into a Los Angeles studio at the end of this month to begin recording the follow-up to 1996's "Pinkerton." According to a spokeman for Weezer, the band has not settled upon a producer for the new record.
The band spokesman also could not confirm nor deny the persistent rumors of a Weezer/Green Day double-bill that would launch sometime this summer, presumably after Weezer completed work on their
new album. We'll keep you posted.
