March 12 [12:00 EST] -- Hopefully Howard Stern enjoyed it while it lasted. Next week, U2's "POP" will debut at number one on the U.S. album chart, unseating Stern's "Private Parts" soundtrack.
U2's acclaimed entry into the techno realm sold 349,002 copies in its first week in stores, outpacing all comers.
Island Records reports that they have already shipped 4.5 million copies of the new U2 album worldwide.
The album has benefited from glowing reviews in "Spin" and "Rolling Stone" as well as the strength of the first single and video, "Discotheque," which has gone gold in the U.S.
The album's second single, "Staring At The Sun," is already getting radio airplay, and will hit stores on April 7.
