"The Simpsons" Hoping U2 Will Drop By

August 14 [7:55 EDT] -- U2 may join Smashing Pumpkins, Cypress Hill, Sonic Youth, Aerosmith, Michael Jackson, and others in the elite corps of artists who have paid a visit to Springfield to visit the Simpsons.

The creators of the animated series have penned a script for the band, tentatively titled "Trash of the Titans," which would air next year. In the episode, Simpson patriarch Homer joins the Edge and Larry Mullen Jr. at Moe's Tavern after Bono bores them all to tears with an ecological sermon.

Before the episode can go into production, the band has to review the script and find time to do voice-overs in the midst of its PopMart tour, which is currently in Eastern Europe.

While the likelihood of a U2/Simpsons collaboration is still up in the air, fans can definitely catch the band on September 4 when they join Puff Daddy, the Spice Girls, Jamiroquai, the Wallflowers, and Beck as performers at the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards.
