For the past few months, Sporty Spice Melanie C. has been hard at work writing and recording tracks for her upcoming solo debut, "Northern Star." The album, which has been taking shape in both London and Los Angeles, is due out in October. While on her second recording trip to L.A., the singer attended Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards on Saturday, where she compared her upcoming project to her previous work with the Spice Girls. "There'll be similarities, you know, 'cause obviously I write with the Spice Girls, I'm writing on my own, so it's all comin' from here," Melanie C. told MTV News. "There's quite a bit of pop on there; there's gonna be a lot [of] dance beats, rock grooves, R&B stuff. I love all music, so it's just gonna be a cross-section, a mish-mosh." As we reported last week, Sporty showed off her versatility by taking the Viper Room stage with the Neurotic Outsiders
and adding her pipes to versions of Billy Idol's "White Wedding" and the Sex Pistols' "Pretty Vacant" and "Anarchy In the U.K." (see "What Brings Together A Sex Pistol And A Spice Girl? Steve Jones Explains").As for those other three Spices, Mel C. says that she and her bandmates will start working on their next album (their first as a foursome) in August. Some of that material might be making its live debut in December, when the girl power group will be playing eight concert dates in England. For those of you who can't make it out to the shows, you can expect the new Spice Girls album to hit store shelves sometime next year.
