Feb. 6 [9:55 EST] -- If you've seen the sleekly trippy clip for Soul Coughing's "Super Bon-Bon," you might think that its hip-hop, jazz-influenced sound makes it a studio-bound unit.
But Soul Coughing frontman M. Doughty recently told MTV News (while hosting "120 Minutes") that recording is not what it's all about for the band.
"What we're about is basically being a live band," Doughty said. "I like what Mike Watt says, 'You make records as fliers for the gigs.'"
In the case of Soul Coughing, whose name comes from a slang term for vomiting, its latest "flier" is "Irresistible Bliss," the band's second album. While the album has gained critical praise for its melding of infectious beats and a hipster spoken-word vocal style, Doughty still maintains that the band is at its best in concert.
"We're just about getting in a room and seeing what we each come up with," Doughty said.
"The band is basically based on each of our sounds and each of our personalities
and musical agendas. So yeah, we toured our butts off for two years, and by the time we got into the studio again there was basically no stopping us."
Soul Coughing kicks off a North American tour Saturday in Vancouver, so you can see what all the fuss is about for yourself:
