Drummer Leaves Pumpkins To Pursue Own Band

November 17 [10:00 EDT] -- The seat behind the Smashing Pumpkins' drum kit is reportedly vacant once again.

Reuters news service reports that Matt Walker, who had assumed drumming duties for the band after original drummer Jimmy Chamberlin was dismissed from the group in 1996, is leaving his temp job with the Pumpkins. Walker, formerly of Filter, is reportedly hoping to devote more time to his own band, Cupcakes, which has a deal with DreamWorks Records. Walker's stint with the Pumpkins will reportedly end with the band's appearance opening for the Rolling Stones on December 5 in Miami.

Chamberlin was dismissed from the band when the drummer was arrested for drug possession after the overdose death of Pumpkins touring keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin. Walker later assumed drumming duties, largely in a touring capacity.
