UPDATE: Charges Against Jennifer Lopez Dropped, But Puff Daddy To Face Weapons Charges

Sean "Puffy" Combs and two others were charged with illegal possession of a firearm on Monday after police say they found a stolen gun in a vehicle Puffy's entourage was riding in following a shooting at a New York nightclub.

Actress/singer Jennifer Lopez was part of that entourage and briefly faced similar charges, but prosecutors dropped the charges late Monday afternoon after reviewing the evidence at hand.

Police stopped Combs, Lopez, and two others as the group was driving away from midtown Manhattan's Club New York where three people were shot at 2:20 a.m. on Monday (see "UPDATE: Jennifer Lopez, Puff Daddy Questioned After New York Club Shooting". Authorities charge that when they stopped the vehicle, they spotted a gun and then took the group in for questioning. Police continued to question Combs and Lopez through the wee hours of the morning and into Monday afternoon, when they were finally officially charged.

Dan Klores (a spokesperson for Puff Daddy) emerged from the Midtown South precinct at approximately 3 p.m. to address the media, and called his client and Lopez "victims of circumstance" noting that both were innocent.

"Sean Combs and Jennifer Lopez had absolutely, positively nothing to do with this shooting," Klores told those gathered outside the Midtown South precinct. "The gun is neither my client's nor Ms. Lopez's. Mr. Combs and Ms. Lopez unwittingly got into a car to escape a life-threatening situation, and they are a mere victim of circumstance in the wrong place at the wrong time. We are convinced that a thorough investigation will prove these to be the absolute facts." [RealVideo]
