R.E.M. plans to shoot the first video for the band's new album, "Up," the weekend of August 22 in Los Angeles. While the band, which is to set release its eleventh studio record on October 27, hasn't decided upon a director yet. R.E.M. has selected "Daysleeper," the opening cut off of "Up," as the first single. A source close to the group describes the new single as "quintessential R.E.M.," suggesting a return to the band's jangle-rock roots, although the record is also said to feature both a string and brass section. As we previously reported (see "R.E.M. Talks New Album, Mulls Single And Tour"), R.E.M. hopes to tour behind the new record, its first without original drummer Bill Berry behind the risers, although no decision had been made about whom the band might take on the road to fill the slot.
