R.E.M. Announces U.S. Tour Dates

Despite R.E.M.'s original plans to forego any major road outing in support of its new album, "Up," frontman Michael Stipe phoned in to MTV News on Monday to announce the band's first summer tour in three years.

R.E.M. had previously said that it would limit its concerts this year to various European festivals and appearances, apparently unwilling to mount an extended tour for the first time without longtime drummer Bill Berry, who formally left the band in 1997. But the band has since changed its mind now plans to kick-off a North American tour on August 9 in Los Angeles at a venue to be determined.

The Athens, Georgia band did take to the stage at several points last year, including the Tibetan Freedom Concert in Washington, DC in June, and for Neil Young's annual Bridge School benefit shows in San Francisco in October. That same month, R.E.M. also played a special MTV "Live from the 10 Spot" at New York City's Bowery Ballroom.

Joining the band's touring line-up will be

Beck's percussionist Joey Waronker, who sat-in with the group for most of its live performances last year.
