Phish Fans Get Grants To Study Its Following, Fall Tour Slated

Talk about your higher education.

Three 20-year-old students from Hanover College, a liberal arts school in southern Indiana, are spending July and August on the road studying the trip-jam band Phish and its fans, thanks to a $6,000 grant awarded for independent and informal studies.

Alea Gold, a theology major who’s investigating the mysticism of Phish's shows, told a local paper the idea germinated last summer and that her "first intention was, 'How can I meet the band?'"

While that dream hasn't come true yet, the students are interacting with Phish's devoted flock, as Rebecca Smith, a sociology major, is studying the communal lives of the band's followers, and Christi Scoccola, a philosophy major, is studying their cult-like lifestyles.

The Associate Dean of Academic Affairs says that the three are using an interview technique called participant observation which necessitates that they dwell amongst their subjects.

On their return to the campus

as juniors in late-August, the students will turn in a financial report -- and a follow-up study on what they discovered. While no academic credit will be awarded for the Phish following, the students will be able to list their experience writing and proposing research grants on their resumes.

Phish, which will play its two-day Lemon Wheel concert in Limestone, Maine, on August 15 and 16, has also announced plans for a fall tour that will launch on October 29 in Los Angeles.
