No Doubt drummer Adrian Young and Vandals bassist Joe Escalante have teamed up with the publishers of Thrasher magazine to start up an alternative golf publication called Schwing! Young holds the position of Senior VP on the masthead while Escalante is listed as Chairman. The magazine's debut issue is being distributed to retail outlets this week.
Both Schwing! and Thrasher, which centers on skateboarding, snowboarding, modern music and other youth-oriented "alternative activities," fall under the wing of High Speed Productions. According to High Speed's James Cusick, both Young and Escalante are avid golfers who recognized that the nocturnal working hours of musicians and other similar professions leaves lots of time for more leisurely daytime activities, with golf at the top of the list.
The pair are also behind the magazine's sponsorship of a celebrity tournament scheduled for February 22 at the Seacliff Country Club in Huntington Beach, CA. Players expected to
participate in the event so far include members of No Doubt, Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth and Offspring among others. The proceeds are being donated to My Friend's Place, a resource center for homeless youth.
