Stubborn All-Stars Deliver Lesson In Ska With Help From Rancid, Bosstones

November 26 [16:00 EDT] -- When putting together their latest effort, old school ska hustlers the Stubborn All-Stars brought in some high-profile help.

The band was joined in the studio by Rancid's Tim Armstrong, Lars Frederiksen, and Matt Freeman, and Mighty Mighty Bosstones frontman Dicky Barrett on a few of the tracks for "Back With A New Batch."

But despite getting help from such noteworthy friends, the All-Stars say their brand of ska is a far cry from what most record buyers seem to think ska is.

"What is popularly known as ska right now has an extremely tenuous relationship with what we think of as ska," band leader King Django told MTV News recently. As a veteran of the New York City ska scene, Django has some very clear cut views as to what "ska" really is, and he doesn't see much of it on the charts.

"Sometimes you go, 'How is this ska?' [800k QuickTime]

You can kind of see it in some cases, but a lot of times it's just so far removed from what we think of as ska.

"I would say that the name of a genre that I've been involved with has become really popular, but the actual music that is associated with that name has extremely little to do with anything that I've ever been involved with."

Django's fellow All-Star Jayson Nugent added, "It's just packaged wrong. It's not invalid, it's just something else. It's a buzzword now, so they're just slapping it on any band that has horns." [500k QuickTime]

"We do what we do," Django summarized. "We've been doing it for a long time, and that's not gonna change."
