One down, one to go...
Metallica frontman James Hetfield is the proud father of an 8 lb, 4 oz., 20 inch baby girl, which now leaves drummer Lars Ulrich alone on the Metallica pre-baby watch. Hetfield's wife Francesca, nearly two weeks overdue at the time, gave birth at 11:13 AM, June 11. They've named their daughter Cali Tee. Next up is Lars Ulrich's wife, Skylar, due in August.
The offspring have inspired strategic breaks in the band's touring plans. With young Cali settled in, Metallica will resume their road trip with U.S. dates beginning with June 23 in Palm Beach, Florida, but they'll be taking a three week break around Skylar's August due date. They'll resume playing through to mid-September.
The expected Ulrich child will be the couple's first, but wife Skylar should be well versed with the procedure -- she's a medical doctor currently doing her residency in New York. Skylar, the former girlfriend of writer/actor Matt Damon, is also the inspiration for
the lead female character in Good Will Hunting -- Minnie Driver played a doctor named Skylar. Damon confessed in press interviews that he once had a girlfriend who broke his heart by running off and marrying a "bad" rockstar (see "The Unlikely Link Between Metallica And Matt Damon").
In other news, Ulrich wasn't bad at all when he played a celebrity tennis match in Oakland over the weekend. He made it to the semi-finals. Ulrich's father was a tennis pro and Lars himself only barely chose his drums over a budding career with a tennis racket when he was a teen.
And on a more musical note, the "Metal Edge" magazine website reports that starting Sept. 21, the band will spend three weeks in the studio recording several new cover songs for their new "Garage Days" release which will feature every cover the band has ever done (see "Metallica Issuing New Single, Video And 'Garage Days' Rerelease").
The record will be released Nov. 17.
