Saadiq Explains Lucy Pearl As Group Announces Tour

As R&B/hip-hop supergroup Lucy Pearl prepares to bring its self-titled debut album to stores, the group has announced a brief club tour to coincide with the release.

The trio, comprised of Raphael Saadiq (Tony! Toni! Toné!), Dawn Robinson (En Vogue), and Ali Shaheed Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest) will launch a tour of some intimate club venues on May 21 in New York.

What do you get when you blend that kind of musical diversity? Raphael simply describes the group's collective sound as "a little bit of Tribe, a little bit of En Vogue, and a little bit of Raphael Saadiq."

If you're wondering where the name originated from, Saadiq told the MTV Radio Network it came about quite by accident.

"I just wanted to say something different," Raphael explained of the Lucy Pearl moniker. "I don't know, we was just chillin' one night, I was like 'Lucy, Lucy, Lucy, ahh, Lucy Pearl.'

"I'm used to dealing with names," Saadiq said. "I came up with the 'Tonys' and all the titles from the Tonys' albums.... I always try to come with something that's gonna be different for our listeners, and kinda like old and new. That's what we came up with, and we stuck with that."

But the former Tonys' frontman also explains that Lucy Pearl wasn't the group's original choice.

"People thought we were gonna be called Disciples Of Soul at first," he recalled. "And we think the 'soul' thing is kinda, like, tired; not soul music, but just the word itself." [RealAudio]

Lucy Pearl will have a seven-piece band in tow as they showcase their self-titled debut album, which will be released by Saadiq's own Pookie Records/Beyond Music on May 23. The performances will feature a preview of Lucy

Pearl's debut album as well as classic number one hits from each of the three member's previous groups.

"Dance Tonight," the first single from the album, is also the first single from the soundtrack to the Spike Lee-produced film "Love & Basketball" (see "Lucy Pearl, Guy, More For 'Love & Basketball'").
