Tedeschi, B.B. King Honored With Blues Awards

Susan Tedeschi, R.L. Burnside, Keb' Mo', Wilson Pickett, and B.B. King were among the winners of the 21st W.C. Handy Blues Awards presented on Thursday night at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis.

Tedeschi, who just last month won three Boston Music Awards (see [article id="1428146"]"Sheila Divine, Godsmack Sweep Boston Music Awards"[/article]), was named the Contemporary Blues Female Artist Of The Year.

Los Angeles singer-songwriter Keb' Mo' picked up a pair of awards, winning both the Contemporary Blues Male Artist Of The Year and the Acoustic Blues Artist Of The Year.

R.L. Burnside, who has collaborated with the likes of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, Beck, and Alec Empire in recent years, was honored with the Traditional Blues Male Artist Of The Year award, while Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers were selected as the Blues Band Of The Year.

The evening's big winners were legendary bluesmen Wilson Pickett and B.B. King. Pickett won three

Handy Blues Awards, for Soul/Blues Male Artist Of The Year, while his 1999 record, "It's Harder Now" was named Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year and Comeback Blues Album Of The Year.

B.B. King, who will release a joint album, "Riding With The King," with Eric Clapton on June 13, was selected as the Blues Entertainer Of The Year.

In related news, King, Buddy Guy, and Susan Tedeschi will head out on the road together for the "B.B. King Blues Festival 2000" starting on August 1 in Las Vegas.
