Elton John: Diana Tribute Sales Rush Not About Me

September 15 [7:55 EDT] -- Elton John's tribute to Princess Diana reportedly became the fastest selling single in British history as more than 600,000 copies flew out off stores hours after its release on Saturday.

According to Reuters news service, the song has already more than doubled the British requirement for platinum sales status (which is 300,000), and is expected to eventually reach its goal of raising $16 million for the Princess Diana Memorial Fund.

While his ballad is re-writing music history, Elton John insists he really has little to do with it. The singer told the British news wire PA that the 600,000 people who rushed out to buy the song were simply looking for a way to come to terms with their loss.

He also hinted that sales figures were not as important as emotional healing.

"It was just one of those things," he said of the sales milestone.
