Jewel Talks Teeth, Readies For Big Screen Debut

Even though Jewel has sold millions of records, and her new album, "Spirit," is currently residing at number four on the Billboard Album charts, it turns out that it might have been the singer's orthodonture that helped her land her first major film role.

In a recent interview with MTV's Kurt Loder, Jewel said that one of the reasons director Ang Lee cast her in his upcoming civil war drama, "Ride with the Devil," was because he liked her famously crooked smile.

"I guess if you wanted to be a standard pop chick," Loder said, "you'd go out and get your teeth fixed and stuff, but you've never done that. I guess it's sort of an endearing quality."

"Is it endearing?" Jewel replied, "it's a bit embarrassing."

"It's a bit endearing," he added, "but

you've never wanted to change it?"

"I don't know," she said, "I just never had the money before and now I don't have the time."

"It might change your enunciation too, wouldn't it," Loder asked.

"I don't know," Jewel said, "I never thought about it. At my dentist the other day -- I was actually at my dentist's office -- he showed me pictures of what could happen to your teeth, if you don't take care of them. These rotten terrible pictures. I was like, 'I'll do anything you want ... show me where to sign.' I think dentists go to the same school as war heroes, they're like strategists of fear. It's awful." [28.8 RealVideo]

Jewel will be ready for her close-up when "Ride with Devil" arrives on big screens next year.
