Michael Jackson Casino Plans Blocked By Detroit Voters

On Tuesday, voters in Detroit gave the thumbs down to a referendum proposal to spend tax dollars to help build a $1 billion casino and theme park being promoted by singer Michael Jackson.

Jackson had made several visits to the area to drum up support for the project, in which he was involved with Detroit millionaire Don Barden.

Jackson announced his plans for what had been dubbed the Majestic Kingdom in early July at a Detroit press conference (see "Michael Jackson Plans Motor City Resort"). At the time, Jackson said that he wanted the proposed theme park/casino/nightclub and restaurant complex to appeal to "the childlike heart that lives inside every man and woman."
