Jan. 30 [12:00 EST] -- Ron Lepp, a middle school teacher in Pleasant Hill, Oregon, wanted to teach his students about the First Amendment and its guarantee of freedom of speech. To do this, he read to his class the lyrics to rapper Ice-T's notorious 1992 Body Count track, "Cop Killer."
The idea was to point out that even speech that we hate must be free, a lesson apparently not grasped by some of his students' parents, who complained to the administration.
The upshot: school superintendent Jim Howard, while praising Lepp as a teacher, has asked him to find a new, non-"Cop Killer" way of conveying his message.
Says Howard, "It wasn't worth trying to explain it to everybody."
