Goos’ Label Won’t Frown On MP3.com Outing; Tourmate Tonic Feels The Pressure

The Goo Goo Dolls are taking to the road with Tonic for MP3.com, an issue of no small concern to the group’s label.

As we previously reported, the Goos-Tonic “Music And Technology” tour will be sponsored by the Web site MP3.com, which offers free downloads of CD-quality music, much to the alarm of many major labels (see “Goo Goo Dolls To Headline MP3.com Tour” ).

According to Warner Brothers spokesman Bob Merlis, the Goos’ involvement with the Web site is fine, as long as the band’s material isn’t made available for downloading. “We don’t own the Goo Goo Dolls,” Merlis told MTV News. “We just have a right to their commercial recordings.”

Tour opener Tonic recently found a new major-label home at Universal, and the band is currently finishing up its next LP, “Sugar,” for a fall release (see “Tonic Flexes D.I.Y. Muscle For ‘Sugar’ Coated Album” ).

As frontman Emerson Hart admitted
to MTV News, the increased attention Tonic is receiving is a bit nerve-wracking, especially after the success of the band’s single from the “American Pie” soundtrack, “You Wanted More” [RealVideo] .

“Because ‘You Wanted More’ did so well,” Hart told MTV News, “I think everybody thought the pressure would be a little lighter, but now the pressure is full on… but that’s okay. We’re lucky to have such problems.”

Bassist Dan Lavery added, “Yeah, but we put the pressure on ourselves too. We wanted the record out this year, and we pushed ourselves to get the recording done and pushed ourselves to produce the record ourselves… so we deserve it.” [RealVideo]
