Gang Starr To Open For Rage Against The Machine On Upcoming Tour

Rage Against The Machine has tapped New York hip-hop duo Gang Starr to open for the group on its upcoming North American tour, which kicks off on November 19 in Oakland, California.

As we reported last week, Rage was considering Gang Starr among the opening-act prospects for its fall tour (see "Rage Against The Machine Talks About U.S. Tour Launch In November"); the matchup has now been confirmed.

Rage will release its new album, "The Battle Of Los Angeles," on Tuesday. The album sticks with the band's usual political subject matter, and with song titles such as "Guerrilla Radio" and "Calm Like A Bomb," you might wonder how these guys blew off steam during the recording process. Guitarist Tom Morello told MTV News the awful truth.

"We would spend half the day playing touch football in the parking lot of A&M studios," Morello revealed. "And, you

know, we had some nice friendly games out on the concrete.... The guy at the studio had some new, fancy cameras there, and so rather than record songs in the afternoon, we would spend much of the time watching these slow-motion replays of our sorry, geeky asses out there, you know, making plays and running them in absolute slow-motion, which was really priceless."

"And I hope you don't get the footage of that," [RealVideo] Morello added. (Alas, we did.)

Rage performed on Wednesday night at the Sports Palace Pavilion in Mexico City, and MTV will broadcast a one hour "Spankin' Live Music" special on the concert next Friday, November 5 at 11 p.m. (ET) (see "Rage Against The Machine Takes Message To Mexico City, Plans New York In-Store").

As for Gang Starr, the duo won't be promoting a new album on its upcoming dates, though it released a two-CD retrospective "Full Clip: A

Decade Of Gang Starr" earlier this year (see "Gang Starr, Ten Years Strong, Drops 'Full Clip' For Fans").

Gang Starr's DJ Premier was also recently in the studio with Jay-Z, whose follow-up to his Grammy Award-winning album "Vol. 2... Hard Knock Life" is due out in December. Premier's partner Guru is currently working on the next installment of his Jazzmatazz project.
