Lauryn Hill Hangs With Camp Kids From Refugee Project

Lauryn Hill kicked off her Everything Is Everything summer tour over the weekend by playing for a near-capacity crowd at Jones Beach in Long Island, New York.

The audience at Jones Beach included some very special guests, namely a busload of kids from Camp Hill, Lauryn's summer camp project sponsored by her nonprofit Refugee Project.

Hill had the kids brought to the show as a surprise, and met and snapped pictures with them backstage at the venue. The singer says the camp provides inner-city kids an opportunity to experience the outdoors and nature, and is all about positivity.

"Simply put," Hill told MTV News, "[the camp] is all about young people, restoring the faith and the idealism to the young minds and trying to surround them with the healthy, happy, joyful, positive, strong, empowering environment." [RealVideo]

Hill's tour rolls into Charlotte, North Carolina on July 16,

then hits Atlanta -- the hometown of Hill's openers, Outkast -- the following evening.
