Fountains Of Wayne Map Out Radio Tour, Talk Ron Sexsmith

The Fountains of Wayne just finished mapping out a short radio tour in support of its just-released sophomore record, "Utopia Parkway." The outing is slated to start on May 24 in New Haven, Connecticut.

For the album, the band enlisted the help of Canadian singer-songwriter Ron Sexsmith, who lent some backing vocals to the dreamy ballad, "A Fine Day for a Parade." [RealAudio]

Fountains of Wayne's Chris Collingwood recently talked with MTV News about working with Sexsmith, who was recording his own new record at a studio near to where the Fountains were cutting "Utopia Parkway."

"I've been a fan of [Sexsmith's] since his first record," Collingwood said. "I was really into him and we just happened to be playing a show at a club in London... and [we were scheduled to play] the night after his show. We had the

day before

off... so we went down to check out his set, and I went backstage and shamelessly introduced myself and then asked him to go out for a couple of beers."

"So I met him and have sort of been pretending that he's my friend ever since then," Collingwood added. "I've been calling and bothering him every once in a while, and it happened that he was recording his record in New York right when we were finishing up our album."

"He was literally right around the block in another studio," noted the Fountains' Adam Schlesinger. "So it was kind of just him swinging by the studio for an hour before he got started [on his own stuff] that day."

"He was real cool about it," Collingwood said. "[He] just came by and knocked it out in the morning... and bore

a lot of ribbing from us about Canadians, which is always fun."

"He asked us if we wanted it to sound like Gordon Lightfoot or not," [RealVideo] Schlesinger joked.

Sexsmith has just released his third album, entitled "Whereabouts," and will head out on the road starting May 29 in Philadelphia for a North American tour.

As for the Fountains of Wayne, the group has just been confirmed for this year's lineup of the Fuji Rock Festival, being held in early August at the base of Mount Fuji in Japan.
