Dave Grohl Joins Verbena Onstage For CMJ Show

While taking a break from writing songs for the Foo Fighters' next album, frontman Dave Grohl made a surprise guest appearance at a New York City club on Wednesday night.

Grohl joined the Birmingham, Alabama group Verbena onstage, and played bass throughout the set, which was part of a Capitol Records showcase for the CMJ MusicFest, which this year features more than 1,000 bands at more than 50 venues in and around the city.

Grohl has made no secret of his admiration for the band and its 1997 indie release, "Souls for Sale," and has been known to openly tout Verbena in the press, citing them as one his favorite contemporary bands.

While there's no official word when the Foo Fighters will release the follow-up to 1997's "The Colour and the Shape," there are rumors that the band hopes to have a new record out by the fall of 1999.
