Flaming Lips Take Flight With "Superman" Single

The Flaming Lips are currently in the middle of the West Coast leg of a North American tour in support of their much-heralded 1999 LP, "The Soft Bulletin," as well as their new single, "Waitin' For A Superman."

The band performed the single during a TV appearance last month on "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" and have also issued an enhanced CD version of the song featuring two remixes from its 1997 "Zaireeka" album as well as videos for "Superman" and "Race For The Prize."

During a recent interview with MTV News, Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne talked about "Waitin' For A Superman," which attempts to find some sort of universal meaning in the rather personal loss of Coyne's own father to cancer in 1997.

"When these powerful things happen in your life," Coyne said, "sometimes I think

people don't want to

revisit them or reflect on them too much because, I don't know, it sort of paralyzes them, or it just plain makes them sad. And it didn't for me."

"So, Steven basically had the melody and chord structure of 'Waitin' For A Superman,'" he continued. "It was something he would play on the piano and I would always hint around, 'Damn, I think I've got something [for that].'

"There was something that drew me to it, having this sort of philosophical, yet sort of personal, bent to the Superman -- the hero in it -- not being able to save the day, but still we're gonna have to [survive] and that it's gonna have to be all right anyway.

"I don't know if it was me wanting to put my life into the songs,"
Coyne said, "or if these things just came along, and it seemed easy to be able to talk about things that were personal to me but really are things that

are going to happen to everybody." [RealAudio]

The Flaming Lips are scheduled to play Portland on March 23 and Seattle on March 24, and the band has also expanded its tour plans to include an extra round of tour dates in mid-April.
