Indigo Girls, Etheridge Among Nominees For GLAMAs

The Indigo Girls, Melissa Etheridge, the Pet Shop Boys, and Luscious Jackson are among the artists vying for honors at the fourth installment of the Gay/Lesbian American Music Awards (GLAMA), to be held on April 24 at the Manhattan Center in New York.

The event honors musicians in 28 categories, including Cabaret, Country, Comedy, Out Recording, and Cast Recording; since the event’s inception in 1996, 20 new categories have been added to the original eight.

The 2000 GLAMAs see the Indigo Girls receiving nods in seven categories (Out Recording, Rock/Alternative, Out Song, Song Of The Year, Producer Of The Year, Band/Duo/Group, and Album). Other categories find the Pet Shop Boys up against Boy George for the Dance Music award, while Melissa Etheridge competes with the dominant Indigo Girls for Out Recording. Me’Shell N’degeocello and Luscious Jackson are both vying for the Pop award, while the breakout musical cast of “Hedwig & The Angry Inch” received a nod for
Score for Film & Theater as well as nominations in the categories of Band/Duo/Group and Rock/Alternative act.

Other performers with strong followings in the gay/lesbian community as well as crossover fans, including dance artist Kevin Aviance (whose video for “Rhythm Is My Bitch” has been popular on MTV2), comedian and Broadway actor-turned-jazz artist Lea DeLaria, and indie-rock darlings The Aluminum Group are also nominated for awards.
