December 24 [12:00 EDT] -- Photographer David LaChapelle, who last year brought us his colorful visions in his book called "LaChapelle Land," has this year brought us a couple of equally colorful music videos.
LaChapelle's first music video directing duty was for The Dandy Warhols' Lead singer Courtney says about the afterglow of the video making experience, "I just wrote [LaChapelle] a little note saying that I think you are brilliant and uh, I'd love to work with you."
LaChapelle told MTV News about his vision of the fanciful video for the song with the refrain, "Heroin is so passe." Says LaChapelle, "I wanted to do something that was kind of like that would really show a sense of humor, but really try and get a point across that it really is passe."
Next up came "Sugarcane" [800k QuickTime] for The Space Monkeys. Says Richard, the band's lead singer, "[LaChapelle] came up with his ideas and we said just go with
it and do whatever you want. If you're working with Picasso you don't pick his colors now do you?" The band was especially thrilled when the director told them that he was going to engage his friend from the breakdancing group, Rock Steady Crew, to appear in the video.
LaChapelle describes his directing style as, "Jack LaLane on acid." No doubt we can look forward to the director's trippy, comic, clever vision of music in the future.
