The Cult Conjures Up Tour; Ian Astbury Solo Album Still On

The reunited Cult performed a warm-up gig last night at the Casbah in San Diego to help hone its chops for the band’s appearance at the Tibetan Freedom Concert being held in East Troy, Wisconsin on June 13.

The gig at the Tibetan Freedom Concert will springboard the Cult — whose line-up now includes singer Ian Astbury, guitarist Billy Duffy, former Porno for Pyros bassist Martyn Le Noble, and onetime Guns N’ Roses drummer Matt Sorum — into a full blown summer tour kicking off a month later.

Management for the seminal goth rock outfit said that Astbury and Duffy decided to bring back the band (which informally split up following the Cult’s 1994 self-titled record) during a phone conversation that led up to an impromptu performance at the Viper Room in April (see “Sporty Spice, The Cult Join Neurotic Outsiders For Viper Room Farewell” ).

A spokesperson for the Cult also indicated that while the band didn’t plan on heading into
a studio immediately following the tour, a solo album from Ian Astbury — which doesn’t feature any other members of the Cult’s current lineup — would instead be released in late summer.

The Cult will hold off cutting any new material until the band lands a new record deal, as it had completed its previous contractual obligation to Beggar’s Banquet and Warner Bros. Records, its American label and distributor.
