Counting Crows Line Up Fall Tour, Talk “Strange” New Album

The Counting Crows will be among the artists suiting up at Giants Stadium on October 9 as part of the American NetAid concert, and the group plans to follow up the charitable appearance by kicking off a two-month tour.

The Crows will be heading out on the road in support of its third studio effort, “This Desert Life,” due out on November 3, and the band previewed several new songs, including “Hanging Around,” during a short mini-tour that culminated with the Crows performance at Woodstock ’99.

MTV News’ Kurt Loder talked with Counting Crows frontman Adam Duritz backstage at Woodstock, and the singer discussed how the band changed its approach in writing and recording album number three.

“I don’t know,” Duritz said, “the second album was a lot more guitar-heavy than the first album, and ['This Desert Life'] is sort of stranger sounding, I think. It’s not quite as heavy, and it’s
not quite as mopey either. [Laughs] We were just in a different mood when we were making this album.”

“It’s a little lighter in tone,” Duritz added, “but not lighter musically. It’s pretty dense musically. There’s a lot more stuff going on. We sort of went in without having written anything [beforehand for] the record, so it was all sort of written and recorded at the same time.” [RealVideo]
