Coldplay is coming to America.
The acclaimed British quartet, whose debut album, “Parachutes,” landed atop the U.K. charts in mid-July after selling more than 70,000 copies in its first week, has just signed a U.S. deal with Nettwerk America.
According to a publicist for the label, “Parachutes” will be issued here on November 7, with plans for the first U.S. single, “Yellow,” to be serviced to radio in January, right around the time of a Coldplay tour slated for late January-early February.
Nettwerk, which also handles BT and Tara MacLean, among others, is hoping to showcase Coldplay at next year’s South By Southwest Music Festival, scheduled for March 9-18 in and around Austin, Texas.
After attending University College in London together, guitarist-vocalist Chris Martin, guitarist Jon Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman, and drummer Will Champion formed Coldplay in 1998, and after signing to Parlophone U.K., released a five-song EP, titled “The Blue
Room,” in the fall of 1999.
Featuring a dreamy pop sound that combines elements of Radiohead, Travis, and Jeff Buckley, the “Parachutes” album was recorded over a six-month period last year with producer Ken Nelson, who engineered Gomez’s “Bring It On” and “Liquid Skin” LPs.
In the U.K., “Parachutes” has just been nominated for a Mercury Music Prize (see “Ashcroft, Death In Vegas, Coldplay Nominated For Mercury Prize” ) and remains British bookmakers’ odds-on favorite to take home the award, which honors the best album of the year.
