Live Jeff Buckley Album, Video Due In May

Almost three years after Jeff Buckley's tragic drowning death in Memphis, Columbia Records plans to celebrate and commemorate the singer-guitarist's all-too-short career with a new live album and home video, both due out on May 9.

Titled "Jeff Buckley - Mystery White Boy," the live album will feature twelve tracks recorded between 1995 and 1996, while Buckley was touring in support of his 1994 solo debut, "Grace," and prior to heading into the studio to record his second album.

In 1998, a posthumous double album of songs and demos that had been recorded for Buckley's sophomore LP was released as "Sketches For My Sweetheart The Drunk.

Mystery White Boy" includes several previously unreleased Buckley compositions, and the songs were chosen by Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert, and the members of Buckley's touring band at the time of the shows: guitarist Michael Tighe, bassist Mick Grondahl, and drummer Matt Johnson.

Live performance activated the strongest

elements of Jeff's gift," Tighe announced in a statement. "He was a generous person. Generous with his heart and there was no place where he was more comfortable than on the stage.

[Buckley] thrived on the energy focused on him and reciprocated it again and again. He loved surpassing expectations. He was an amazing, spontaneous creator.

In addition to the live album, which features tracks recorded in Hamburg, Germany and Melbourne, Australia as well as Seattle and San Francisco, Columbia will also be issuing "Jeff Buckley - Live In Chicago" on video and DVD.

Live In Chicago" was originally recorded at Buckley's concert at the Cabaret Metro on May 13, 1995, and features "What Will You Say," an instrumental version of the "Sketches" tune "Vancouver," and covers of The MC5's "Kick Out The Jams.

Buckley drowned while swimming in the Mississippi River the night of May 29, 1997, although his body wasn't recovered until a few days later (see [article id="1426668"]"Jeff Buckley Found Drowned In Memphis"[/article]).
