Blues Traveler’s Popper Talks About Being Like Mike

What do Michael Jordan and Blues Traveler frontman John Popper have in common, besides a 40-inch vertical leap of course?

Well, both men turn up in Gatorade’s newest ad campaign revisiting the sports drink’s popular “Be like Mike” jingle from a few years back.

This time around, Popper and his harmonica chime in on a new version of the Gatorade ditty, which actually spawned a full-length version that floated through sports-hungry Chicago bars when it first arrived in the early 90s.

On the set of the shoot for the new commercial, Popper talked about how mere mortals can strive to be like the man that some consider to be the greatest athlete in organized sports.

“He connects to you with it,” Popper said of Jordan’s on-court skill. “I’m not even sure if it’s something he’s in control of. It’s just that the way he plays, you see his utter focus,
and I think you can apply that focus, or at least striving towards that kind of focus, to anything you do. When you’re in your zone and you’re doing something that you really love and you’re really good at it” [1MB QuickTime]

In addition to spotting him in the Gatorade spot, fans will next get to see Popper in his zone when Blues Traveler plays this summer’s H.O.R.D.E. tour.
