Mary J. Blige, Macy Gray, Erykah Badu, Kelly Price, and Rev. Run from Run-DMC are among the hip-hop artists set to perform in Washington, D.C., on October 16 during the planned Million Family March.
Nation of Islam Minister Louis Farrakhan is organizing the event, which according to the march’s mission statement will rally political support for “National Agenda 2000-2008,” an initiative of several public policy issues and programs affecting the quality of life for all races in the U.S.
Organizers say the Million Family March will also focus on increasing voter turnout for the upcoming presidential and congressional elections through a voter-registration drive.
In addition to the confirmed performers, other artists such as Eve, DMX, Jay-Z, Snoop Dogg, D’Angelo, Common, Ice Cube, the Wu-Tang Clan, and Dead Prez have been approached by rap mogul Russell Simmons to cut public service announcements to promote the march.
“I believe this march
will have a dramatic effect on race relations,” Simmons said in a statement. ” It’s a march about the human family, rising above color and religion, symbols and creed.”
Simmons has been tapped by organizers to co-chair the Million Family March’s Entertainment Committee along with Will Smith, Sean “Puffy” Combs, Queen Latifah, and Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown.
