September 4 [13:00 EDT] -- Metal rules, and testosterone too, in the summer-package-tour financial reckonings just published by the concert-trade magazines "Pollstar" and "Performance."
Of the summer's package tours, Ozzy Osbourne's Ozzfest outing came in at number one, grossing an average of $600,000 per show, some $135,000 more per show than the second place Lilith Fair tour, which featured all-female headliners.
Both of these package offerings beat out such other road trips as Lollapalooza, H.O.R.D.E., the Further festival, the Warped tour, and Smokin' Grooves, at least in terms of money per show.
U2 had the highest average gross of any summer tour, at $2.5 million per show.
Ozzy will celebrate his King of the Road status with a new greatest-hits album in November, tentatively titled "Ozzman Cometh," which we first reported last month.
Ozzy reps say that current talk of a full-scale Black Sabbath reunion
tour, with drummer Bill Ward back on board, is, for the moment, just talk.
