Jimmy Page, Black Crowes Offer Free Zeppelin Download

Legendary Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page and The Black Crowes have teamed up with WindowsMedia.com and Musicmaker.com to offer a free download of their live version of Zeppelin’s “What Is And What Should Never Be.”

The download was made available via WindowsMedia.com on Wednesday at midnight and was scheduled to begin airing on U.S. radio stations on Thursday.

The track, which originally appeared on “Led Zeppelin II,” was recorded during Page and the Crowes’ two-night stand at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles last October 18 and 19 (see “Jimmy Page To Tour With Black Crowes; Rumors Abound About Breakup With Plant” ).

During those shows (and several others in New York City), Page and The Black Crowes performed a mix of Zeppelin and Crowes tunes as well as a handful of other songs from the likes of Jimmy Rogers and Elmore James.

The “What Is And What Should Never Be” cut marks the second time that Page and the
Crowes have offered a free listen at some of the music from the L.A. concerts. In January, Musicmaker.com started offering a downloadable version of their cover of Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well” through its site.

There has been talk swirling for the last few weeks about the possible online release of even more material from the Greek Theatre shows. Page and Crowes frontman Chris Robinson are expected to announce details of such plans during the Silicon Alley 2000 convention, being held in New York City on February 29 through March 3.

Musicmaker.com has already provided fans with a sneak peek at what is in the works, as there is an area of their Web site suggesting that some 19 songs from the Greek Theatre gigs, including “Whole Lotta Love,” “Ten Years Gone,” and “Hey Hey What Can I Do,” will be available through either a custom-manufactured CD or digital download starting on February 29.

Such
a deal would likely be similar to the one Musicmaker struck last year with the Beastie Boys for the release of its “The Sounds Of Science” anthology (see “Make Your Own Beastie Boys Best-Of” ).
