Volcano Gives Rise to Oldies Concert

July 31 [16:00 EDT] -- One man's disaster can be another man's blessing, or at least classic rock fans in England aren't complaining.

The Washington Post reports that Beatles Producer George Martin is organizing a concert in London featuring the likes of Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Mark Knopfler and Sting to benefit the volcano victims on the Caribbean island of Montserrat.

Sir George ran a studio on the island and hosted all the above musicans there at one time or another. The facility was destroyed by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Now Montserrat is being threatened by a volcano that flared to life in July of 1995 and has since caused almost half of the 11,000 residents to flee. The latest eruption, June 25, is thought to have killed close to 20 people.

The benefit is scheduled for Sept. 15 at London's the Royal Albert Hall. More artists are expected to be announced later.
