November 18 [7:55 EDT] -- Fiona Apple has a Thanksgiving message for us all: "save the turkeys."
Always the rebel, Apple is protesting the butchering of (in particular) Butterball turkeys on behalf of PETA-People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, via a recorded message on the organization's phone line.
The phone message is a direct response to a service offered by Butterball that gives callers recipes for cooking their Thanksgiving turkeys and the various trimmings. Apple's recording tells callers to join her in calling Butterball to tell them "there is no proper way to kill and cook these beautiful birds."
She offers up what she purports to be better tasting vegetarian recipes instead, saying that "millions of people are learning that a vegetarian diet is the healthy choice for themselves, the earth, and animals."
Callers can hear her pleas and cop some recipes by dialing 1-888-VEG-FOOD.
