B*witched is in, the Spice girls are out and All Saints are way out, according to Smash Hits magazine, considered the pop bible for Britain. In the publication's annual awards poll celebrated yesterday in London, B*Witched won for Best Newcomer while The Spice Girls were reduced to a lowly 'Best Haircut' nod for Posh Spice Victoria Adams, coupled with Worst Video ("Viva Forever") and Worst Film ("Spice World"). All Saints didn't earn so much as a mention from the podium, but nonetheless the group was the talk of the night for pulling out of their commitment to perform their new single at the live show Sunday amid rumors that Nicole Appleton had left the band. The official excuse given was that the singer was ill. The band later released a statement that appeared to confirm that the girls had a tiff, but made no mention of a split. (see "All Saints Break, But No Break-up"). Meanwhile sixteen-year old budding pop star Billie
topped three categories -- Princess of Pop, Best Female Solo Star and Best Dressed Female. But that was offset when she won four 'worst' categories -- Worst Female Singer, Worst Single, Worst Album and "Sad Loser of 1998.". For the most part, however, it was the boys night out. Irish band Boyzone took six awards including Best Band on Planet while fellow boyband 5ive, formed by the same team that gave us the Spice Girls, were deemed the Best British Band. Not all the boys did well, however. Hanson were voted the worst group.
