Undoubtedly, one of the most rousing moments of the 1999 MTV Video Music Awards came when old school rappers Run-DMC and rock veterans Aerosmith joined Kid Rock onstage for a medley of "King of Rock," "Rock Box," and "Walk This Way."
Backstage after the performance, Run-DMC talked with MTV News about the rap-rock VMA collaboration as well as the group's continued influence over such hybrid acts as Rock, Limp Bizkit, and Korn.
"It was retarded," Run said in praise of the pairing with Kid Rock and Aerosmith."what with Run-DMC, Aerosmith, and Kid Rock? Kid Rock told me that Run-DMC and Aerosmith had a baby, and it was Kid Rock."
"[On] two records with him, as a matter of fact," Run interjected.
"Yeah, we made two songs with Kid Rock," Jay agreed, "and our [new] single is with Kid Rock. But to have Kid Rock and Aerosmith onstage for the first performance at the MTV [VMAs], and to do three of our songs, that was bananas."
Run-DMC will release its new album, "Crown Royal," on November 16, and the record features guest appearances from Fat Joe, Limp Bizkit, Nas, Sugar Ray, Method Man, Kid Rock, Ol' Dirty Bastard, and the Beastie Boys' Ad-Rock.
Kid Rock teams with Run-DMC on the first single and video from "Crown Royal," tentatively titled "Scream For Your Life."
This weekend, Run-DMC will kick off the Hip-Hop 20th Anniversary Fresh Fest, along with the Sugar Hill Gang, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Kurtis Blow, and Whodini (see "Run-DMC, Sugar Hill Gang To Hit Road For Hip-Hop's 20th Anniversary").
Catch all the sizzlin', star-packed VMA action direct from Miami on August 28. MTV News' preshow kicks things off at 6:30 p.m. ET/PT, followed by big show at 8 p.m.
