Foo Fighter Dave Grohl is the latest artist to join hip-hop super-producer Sean "Puffy" Combs on wax. The odd couple entered a New York studio last Sunday to work on a remix of the Puff Daddy track "It's All About The Benjamins," on which the lead Foo plays drums. It's not clear when or if the track will be released... In stores this week are two classic reissues by pioneering Aussie punks, the Saints, (I'm) Stranded (1977) and Eternally Yours (1978). The Triple X label's reissues make the albums available in the U.S. for the first time on CD... October will see the release of two new Elvis Costello collections. Extreme Honey: The Very Best of the Warner Bros. Years is an 18-track set spanning 1989-96, including a new track called "The Bridge I Burned"; Live -- A Case for Song is a video compilation featuring BBC performances with the Attractions and the Brodsky Quartet...

San Francisco's ridiculously prolific (seven albums in three years) psychedelic train wreck, the Brian Jonestown Massacre have been signed to TVT records and will have an album out in early 1998... Paul McCartney, Sting, Elton John, Phil Collins and Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler got together Monday (Sept. 15) at London's Royal Albert Hall to raise money for the volcano-ravaged Caribbean island of Montserrat. Reuters reports that the concert, which featured an all-star jam with all the artists performing the Beatles' "Hey Jude," raised more than $1 million. The concert, for which all the artists performed for free, was coordinated by former-Beatles producer George Martin, whose famed Montserrat recording studio was destroyed by volcanic ash...

Spiritualized's "Ladies and Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space," the awesome title track from the band's most recent album, will be remixed by the Chemical Brothers. The release of the album was delayed by two weeks earlier this summer while leader Pierce was forced to re-record the title track at the 11th hour to excise a reference to the Elvis Presley hit "Can't Help Falling in Love." The remix of the song is not yet scheduled for release...

Music biz veteran Danny Goldberg was named chairman of the Mercury Group this week, just two years after taking over the reigns, as president, of Mercury Records and subsequently scoring major hits with artists signed during his watch such as Hanson, 311, Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Foxy Brown. Before joining Mercury he was chairman and chief executive of Warner Bros. Records. Before that he managed Nirvana, Sonic Youth and others... One year after his arrest on felony drug possession charges, Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan has had the charges dropped by the L.A. District Attorney's office. Gahan , who completed a court-ordered diversion rehabilitation program, was arrested on May 31, 1996 at the Sunset Marquis Hotel in L.A. following an overdose... Phone-pranking pinheads the Jerky Boys fourth album, creatively titled The Jerky Boys 4 (Oct. 4) will feature an enhanced CD portion with animated versions of their most popular characters.
