Basement Jaxx's 'Bingo Bango' Bangs To Top Of Club-Play Chart

Remixes by David Morales and DJ Funk knock Madison Avenue to #2.

Celebrated house duo Basement Jaxx claim the top spot on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart this week, bumping Madison Avenue's "Don't Call Me Baby" to #2.

"Bingo Bango" (RealAudio excerpt), a vinyl-only double single featuring remixes by David Morales and DJ Funk, reaches #1 in just seven weeks. The song is the third release from the Jaxx's 1999 hit album, Remedy. The London duo are producers Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliffe.

"It's got a good vocal track, which appeals to the dance-hall crowd; and they're riding on their name," Mike Battaglia, an electronic-music clerk at San Francisco's Amoeba Records, said of "Bingo Bango." "But I don't think it has the power of 'Rendez-Vu' [a previous Basement Jaxx club-chart #1]."

"Don't Call Me Baby" (RealAudio excerpt), a huge UK hit earlier this year, may have slipped on the club-play chart, but it climbs to #4 on Billboard's Hot Dance Music/Maxi-Singles Sales chart this week, behind Sting's "Desert Rose" (RealAudio excerpt), featuring Cheb Mami, which tops the chart for the ninth consecutive week; Lara Fabian's "I Will Love Again" (RealAudio excerpt) at #2; and Zombie Nation's "Kernkraft 400" at #3.

" 'Don't Call Me Baby' is one of those little infectious numbers," said Jesse Plance, editor of the online publication NAJM (No Attitude Just Music) Dance Music Network. "This tune is an ultra-retro, fun party song. Puts me in mind of early Deee-Lite. The hook really holds it together, with a classic funk riff, and the vocals suggest Eartha Kitt meets Crystal Waters."

On the club-play chart, Deborah Cox's "I Never Knew" jumps from #11 to #3 in only its fourth week on the chart, while "Higher" (RealAudio excerpt) by Moca — a combined alias of producers David Morales and Albert Cabrera — moves from #10 to #4. Rosabel and Debbie Jacobs-Rock's "Don't You Want My Love" (RealAudio excerpt), a former #1, falls to #5.

Rounding out the Top 10 is Mariah Carey's "Can't Take That Away (Mariah's Theme)" at #6; Twelve Tone's "Spirit of Man" at #7; Oceania's "Kotahitanga" at #8; Chicane's "Don't Give Up" (RealAudio excerpt), featuring Canadian pop singer Bryan Adams, at #9; and Ariel's "Woman in Love" at #10.

In other chart news, Moby's "Porcelain" (RealAudio excerpt), the latest single from his award-winning album Play, ascends to #16, followed at #17 by "How's Your Evening So Far?," a new track by Josh Wink that samples Lil' Louis' house classic "French Kiss."
